HYDERABAD: A telephonic call from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday triggered speculation that the MIM chief might have been invited to join Manmohan Singh's cabinet.
"It was nice of her (Sonia Gandhi) to call me personally. She congratulated me for retaining the Hyderabad LS seat and also on the spectacular performance of MIM," Owaisi told TOI on Tuesday.
However, he declined to comment
"I have sought time from her to discuss issues related to the Muslim community after she is finished with the formalities of cabinet formation and her response was positive," Owaisi said.
HYDERABAD: Voters in the State capital have summarily rejected the Grand Alliance (GA) comprising Telugu Desam, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Left parties by not sending any of their representatives to the State Assembly. The only saving grace for Telugu Desam, the main Opposition party, is that it managed to get five seats in the neighbouring Ranga Reddy district. That theelectorate did not get swayed over the promise of a separate Telangana state by the Grand Alliance was evident when the TRS candidates in five segments of Hyderabad district and four in Ranga Reddy district were t rounced totally. The CPI and CPI (M) which contested one seat each in Hyderabad district too did not get a favourable mandate. The AIMIM candidates won all the seven Assembly segments they contested in Hyderabad, while losing the electoral battle in Rajendranagar seat in Rangareddy. The Praja Rajyam which contested 14 seats in Hyderabad and 12 in Ranga Reddy failed to open its account and so did Lok Satta, which contested 12 seats in Hyderabad. Of the 14 seats contested in Ranga Reddy, the LS managed to get only Kukatpally, where its president Jayaprakash Narayan was in the fray. Interestingly, the Telugu Desam candidates in Hyderabad and Secunderabad Parliament constituencies too were rejected with Hyderabad re-electing Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), an ‘unofficial’ ally of the Congress and Secunderabad returning the Congress nominee Anjan Kumar Yadav. Telugu Desam Party’s Zahed Ali Khan stood second in Hyderabad constituency, while BJP’s candidate and party’s State president Bandaru Dattatreya was no match to Congress. The other two newly created Lok Sabha seats in Ranga Reddy district – Chevella and Malkajgiri were bagged by the Congress nominees S. Jaipal Reddy and Sarvey Satyanarayana. Following is the tally of different parties in Hyderabad (15 Assembly segments) and Ranga Reddy (14 Assembly) districts: Hyderabad: Congress – 7, MIM – 7, BJP – 1. Ranga Reddy: Congress – 8 (including a Congress rebel candidate from Qutbullahpur), TDP-5, Lok Satta – 1. Record win for Asaduddin Owaisi By Special Correspondent Hyderabad: In the end it proved a walkover for Asaduddin Owaisi. The Majlis president retained the Hyderabad Parliamentary seat with effortless ease, proving the invincibility of his party. In spite of a no-holds-barred campaign by four party alliance of Mahakutami, Mr. Asaduddin won by a thumping majority of 1,10,768 votes defeating Siasat Editor and TDP candidate, Zahid Ali Khan. In fact he improved upon his 2004 victory margin by 10,623 votes. Mr. Asaduddin polled 2,93,532 votes as against 1,82,764 by Mr. Khan. Congress candidate, P. Laxman Rao Goud, came a poor third by polling 91,159 votes while the BJP’s Satish Agarwal got 74,015 votes. MIM puts up spectacular performance Special Correspondent MIM wrests newly created constituencies of Bahadurpura, Nampally and Malakpet Akbaruddin Owaisi does a hat-trick by winning the Chandrayangutta Assembly constituency Hyderabad: When other political parties faced major upsets, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen kept up its winning spree in the city. The party put up a spectacular performance winning all but one seat it contested. Majlis president, Asaduddin Owaisi, led the party’s impressive show by retaining the Hyderabad Parliament seat with a majority of 1,10,768 votes. In the Assembly election, the party romped home victorious from seven constituencies, increasing its tally in the State legislature from five to seven. While the Majlis triumph was never in doubt, the spirited fight given by TDP candidate and Siasat Editor, Zahid Ali Khan, with the support of left parties and the MBT caused jitters in the Majlis camp. At one stage in the bitter campaign, even the leadership was unsure how the party would fare. Though the Majlis candidates emerged victorious, the margin of victory of some sitting MLAs got reduced. The only seat Majlis lost was Rajendranagar where its candidate, Y. Muralidhar Reddy was defeated by T. Prakash Goud of TDP. The Majlis wrested the newly created constituencies of Bahadurpura, Nampally and Malakpet with Mohd. Moazam Khan, Mohd Virast Rasool Khan and Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala winning. Akbaruddin Owaisi did a hat-trick by winning the Chandrayangutta Assembly constituency for the third time. Other sitting MLAs Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and Mohd. Muqtada Khan retained their seats at Charminar, Yakutpura and Karwan respectively. Credit for the good performance of Majlis goes to Mr. Asaduddin who led the party from the front. The victory is all the more significant since it is the first general election the party won under his leadership after the death of his father, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi. The strong fight put up by the ‘Mahakutami’ candidates had its effect in the old city. Though they did not win a single seat, they cut into the votes of Majlis. In Charminar Mr. Quadri won by just 10,695 votes as against 1,07,921 votes in 2004. Similarly, in Karwan Mr. Muqtada Khan’s margin of victory came down by 2952 votes. BJP bites the dust HYDERABAD: The hopes of the BJP to become a “decisive force” in the State were dashed with only two of its 269 candidates making it to the Assembly and none to the Lok Sabha. It had fielded candidates in 41 of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies. The party’s poor show could be gauged by the fact that all the stalwarts—State president Bandaru Dattatreya, national secretary N. Indrasena Reddy, Baddam Bal Reddy, former Union Minister Ch.Vidyasagar Rao and K. Laxman—had to bite the dust. Mr. Dattatreya sought to make it to the Lok Sabha from Secunderabad constituency, while Mr.Reddy was fielded from Malkajgiri. BY TIMES OF INDIA Cong, MIM repeat success story 17 May 2009, 0346 hrs IST, TNN HYDERABAD: In a virtual repeat of 2004, the Congress and the MIM pulled it off in city constituencies while the TDP drew a blank. The BJP, which won a single seat then, also repeated its performance. However, in some constituencies in Ranga Reddy district, which fall under GHMC limits, there was solace for the TDP. The biggest upset in the city was for TDP’s T Srinivas Yadav who lost to Jayasudha of the Congress from the Secunderabad Assembly constituency with a margin of 4,395 votes.
